Q: Why are you offering Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield software?

A: The sensitive information you share on the internet is invaluable to fraudsters. Without protecting this information all of the time, on all websites, your identity and your money may be at risk. Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield provides you with an additional layer of protection when you are banking, shopping and transacting online.

Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield protects all the details that you may share with an internet banking, web shopping or social networking website, such as: login details, passwords, account numbers, credit card details, social security numbers and personal information such as addresses, dates of birth etc. Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield protects these details all of the time against keyloggers and screengrabbers which may try to steal your information.

Q: What is the difference between my antivirus and Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield?

A: Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield is focused on protecting the details you share with a website; antivirus software is focused on detecting and removing viruses on your PC.

Most antivirus products work on the principle of specifically identifying a threat either by its signature or simple behavior and preventing its damaging effects by removing any malicious software it finds. Unfortunately when new or different malicious software is written by hackers, it can evade this form of detection long enough, for example for a few hours or even days and gather valuable user data, which can then be used to remove money from your bank account or used for other criminal activities, such as stealing your identity.

Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield adds a secondary layer of protection and is designed to neutralize hard to detect malicious software such as banking Trojans by using a series of generic protection mechanisms, keeping your identity and online activity secure:

  • Protects credentials entered into websites from being stolen by malware that has by-passed your antivirus software
  • Alerts you if you try to access a phishing website
  • Alerts you if malware tries to re-direct you to a malicious website
  • Prevents malware from reading or copying the information on a webpage
  • Detects existing malware and viruses on your PC, and those trying to install

Q: Do I still need to use the existing antivirus software on my PC?

A: Yes, you still need to use an antivirus program on your PC. Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield provides added protection on top of your existing antivirus software. It protects your personal information online and will work alongside your existing antivirus software; it is designed to protect your log-in details, such as username and password, as well as personal identity information like your bank account details. It does not remove infections on your PC.

Q: What happens when Webroot SecureAnywhere Identity Shield detects a threat?

A: The software is designed to provide protection without warnings and pop-ups, allowing you to carry out your daily activities on your PC. However, if you inadvertently stray onto a web site that has a known threat, the software will display a warning such as the one below. Unless you are absolutely confident that the web site you are visiting is genuine, for example it is not pretending to be your bank and does not contain malicious content, you should always “Close”.

Important Note: Webroot SecureAnywhere is a very powerful ally in preventing cybercrime but is reliant on the individual acting responsibly. Ignoring warnings can result in compromised security.
